Yorktown pastor arrested, accused of having sex in church with 15-year-old girl

YORKTOWN, Ind. â€" Police arrested a Yorktown pastor who admitted heâ€™d had sex with a teenage girl he was counseling.

According to court documents, Terry Dobbs, 53, gave police a full confession after being confronted about his activities with the teen. Dobbs is pastor of Old Fashion United Baptist Church in Yorktown.

Police first learned about Dobbs and the teenager on Dec. 2, when they were contacted about a possible sexual relationship between the two.

The 15-year-old girl told police sheâ€™d been having sex with Dobbs for the last two months. During an interview, the teen said it started when Dobbs began counseling her for some problems she was having over the summer.

During those conversations, Dobbs talked about kissing her, the teen told police. After they kissed, they fondled one another and then progressed into sex acts and sexual intercourse at the church.

The teen told police she had text messages from Dobbs on her computer and that the two of them had taken nude photos and exchanged them via computer and phone.

On Thursday, Dec. 8, Yorktown police brought Dobbs in for questioning. He â€œgave a full confessionâ€ about what had taken place, according to court documents, and was arrested.

Charges against Dobbs include sexual misconduct with a minor, vicarious sexual gratification with a minor, child exploitation and child solicitation.

Is sex addiction real? Maybe not, therapists say

Claiming a sex addiction may be a go-to for misbehaving celebrities and politicians, but from a science perspective there isn't enough study to prove sex addiction isÂ real, according to a professional organization of sex educators and therapists.

There is not enough empirical evidence to classify sex addiction or porn addiction as a mental disorder, the The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT)Â said in a statement to members lastÂ week. TheÂ organization saidÂ that current sex addiction therapy and counseling is not adequately informed by human sexuality and thus not supported as a standard practice by the organization.

While the organization is in no way saying that people donâ€™t experience real physical, psychological and health consequences from their sexual urges, sex addiction is an â€œoversimplification of a complex area of human sexual behavior,â€ Douglas Braun-Harvey, a sexual health author and psychotherapist, said in a statementÂ Dec.9.

â€œI think the most important thing to remember is that there are people who are suffering from their sexual behavior being out of control, but what ends up happening is that the suffering, the fear and the consequences it brings to their careers and families get prematurely and very quickly labeled sex addiction,â€ said Braun-Harvey, who is one of the authors of the AASECT statement.

AASECT certification is needed in many states to become a sexual counselor, according to the organizationâ€™s website.Â So the organizationâ€™s stance on sex addiction sends an important message, especially at a time when sex addiction therapy is constantly in the headlines.

In early November, former politician Anthony Weiner was spotted riding a horse at a treatment facility that offers equine therapy for sex addiction, AP reported. Â And a quick Google search shows sex addiction therapists and treatment facilities are plentiful.

Joseph Burgo, a clinical psychologist, and author of >The Narcissist You Know told USA TODAY in August that sex addiction is controversial for a number of reasons.

"When it's something like alcohol you are addicted to or drugs, that's one thing, but when it's food or sex, those are normal human needs, so it's more controversial," he said, adding that little research has been done on sex addiction.

"Addiction implies a biochemical basis, and there are not sufficient studies to demonstrate that," Burgo said.

Yorktown pastor accused of sex with teen

MUNCIE, Ind. â€" The pastor of a Yorktown church was being held in the Delaware County jail on Friday, accused of having sexÂ with a 15-year-old member of his congregation.

Terry Wayne Dobbs, 53 â€" pastor at Old Fashion United Baptist Church, 9211 W. Arch St. â€" was arrested Thursday evening, preliminarily charged with sexual misconduct with a minor, vicarious sexual gratification, child exploitation and child solicitation.

The pastorâ€™s bond was set at $35,000.

According to an affidavit, Yorktown police learned from authorities in Allen County on Dec. 2 that a 15-year-old girl had disclosed she was involved in a sexual relationship with her minister.

A Yorktown officer interviewed the girl Thursday. She said she began counseling with Dobbs about personal problems in July.

According to the report, the pastor â€œstarted out very slowly with talking about kissing her.â€

Authorities allege Dobbs and the girl eventually began fondling each other at the church, and later had sex there three times.

The alleged victim also said she and the minister had exchanged nude photos via cellphones and computers.

Dobbs, of the 6900 block of West Bethel Avenue, was also interviewed on Thursday, and gave a â€œfull confession,â€ police reported.

Courts records reflect no prior charges against Dobbs.

An additional seven officers were suspended without pay, and another is receiving counseling, according to CNN affiliate KRON4.

The four Oakland Police Department officers who were terminated also face charges of attempted sexual assault, lewd conduct in public, assisting in the crime of prostitution, being untruthful to investigators, and failing to report a violation of law for not disclosing that a minor had sexual contact with police.

The seven suspended officers are accused of accessing a law enforcement database for personal gain, failing to report a violation of the law, and bringing disrepute to the department.

Schaaf said at the press conference that the firings and suspensions send "a loud and clear message that we hold our officers to nothing but the highest standards of professionalism and integrity."

Disturbing allegations

The punishments bring some resolution to the scandal that began last fall with the suicide of OPD officer Brendan O'Brien. Officials say an investigation into his death uncovered disturbing allegations.

An 18-year-old former prostitute alleged she had sex with O'Brien, as well as with a number of other officers from the department and officers from nearby jurisdictions.

The young woman, who goes by the pseudonym Celeste Guap, said it all started when she was 17 years old and became romantically involved with O'Brien, who she credits with saving her from a dangerous pimp.

"He saved me when I was 17," Guap told CNN in a phone conversation. "Instead of taking me to jail, we just kind of started something there, you know."

O'Brian, she said, later introduced her to other officers who became customers.

As the investigation widened, other officers became embroiled in the scandal. Ultimately, four police chiefs resigned and 28 officers across five departments were alleged to have had sexual contact with Guap.

Multiple relationships

Some of the officers paid to have sex, Guap said. Others exchanged confidential information, such as tipping her off about prostitution stings, for sexual favors.

Of the 28 officers, Guap said 14 were from the Oakland Police Department. The others included five Richmond police officers, several Alameda County Sherriff's deputies, a Livermore police officer and a Contra Costa County Sheriff's deputy.

The Oakland Police Department is no stranger to scandal. Since 2003 a federal monitor has been in place to ensure the department complies with a negotiated settlement agreement stemming from a police corruption scandal.

Officers had been accused of planting evidence and assaulting suspects. No accused officers were ever convicted, but one officer fled prosecution and to this day remains at large. The city paid out more than $10 million to more than 100 plaintiffs and agreed to make reforms, eventually ending up under federal monitoring.

Wednesday's announcements were "about making department-wide changes," Schaaf said.

"We see you, we are here for you, we are here to help you," she added, addressing victims of sexual abuse in the city.

Post-Election, Survivors Of Assault Are Struggling To Have Sex Again

After the now infamous recording of President-elect Donald Trump bragging about grabbing women by the pussy came out, Anna*, 33, went to her Facebook page to share her story. In high school, she had been raped by her boyfriend, and in that moment, she wanted people to know.

â€œI didnâ€™t say anyoneâ€™s name, I just said I had been raped and I was a domestic violence and sexual assault survivor, and why it bothered me so much what Trump had said,â€ Anna told The Huffington Post. â€œI said, this is not just locker room talk. This happens to people, and this happened to me.â€

After posting,Â Anna felt great. She heard from several women who shared their own stories and she helped connect them to resources. But then her ex-boyfriend reached out, saying he was going to sue her â€• at the the same moment Trump was threatening to sue his accusers. It was an unsettling parallel Anna could not quite wrap her head around, and she was anxious for the election to be over.

â€œI kept wanting to think that Trump wouldnâ€™t get elected and our nation would say this kind of thing isnâ€™t OK,â€ Anna said. Since Trumpâ€™s win, she has been in a tailspin. For a week-and-a-half, she couldnâ€™t sleep. She still hasnâ€™t really been able to be intimate with her husband.

â€œSince Trumpâ€™s comment, weâ€™ve only had sex a couple of times,â€ she said, adding that she was going to meet with her doctor to talk about options. â€œI donâ€™t want to feel this way.â€Â

The 2016 presidential campaign was difficult for many women, especially those who felt triggered by Trumpâ€™s so-called â€œlocker room talk,â€ and a string of allegations that heâ€™d groped and kissed women without their consent. But Trumpâ€™s win, they say, is even more difficult â€• not just a reminder of everything theyâ€™ve been through, but a minimizing of it. And it has left their sex lives in shambles.

â€œIt resurfaced a lot of past trauma that I had experienced about seven years ago when I was sexually assaulted,â€ Ali, 28, told The Huffington Post. â€œI had gotten to a point where I had taken my own power back from my rapist, and this felt like the American people telling me, â€˜No, no. He still has more power over you.â€™â€

Prior to Trumpâ€™s win, Ali had sex with her husband every other day. Now, theyâ€™ve been having sex maybe once a week â€• not nothing, but not the same. When they do have sex, Ali feels far less enthusiastic.Â

â€œIâ€™m just not as comfortable letting myself be sexual right now,â€ she said.

It is hardly a surprising reaction, says Wendy Maltz, a sex therapist and author of The Sexual Healing Journey: A Guide For Survivors Of Sexual Abuse.

â€œHere, we have a really unprecedented situation where a person who has been identified as a sexual perpetrator by many women has been elevated to the highest position in the country,â€ she said. â€œFor many [people] whoâ€™ve been sexually abused, itâ€™s a huge shock.â€

Trumpâ€™s broader triggering effect has been well-documented. Soon after Trumpâ€™s â€œgrab them by the pussyâ€ tape came out,Â RAINNÂ â€•Â the sexual assault survivor nonprofit that runs the National Sexual Assault Hotline â€• saw call traffic increase by 33 percent. At one point during the campaign, 3,000 therapists signed a â€œmanifestoâ€ detailing the psychological toll they believed Trump was taking on their patients, everything from anxiety and fear to shame, Politico reports. One therapist who works with survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault told Slate sheâ€™d seen an uptick in patients calling for emergency counseling sessions, and experiencing flashbacks and an inability to go outside.Â

But itâ€™s not just Trumpâ€™s behavior, Maltz said. Itâ€™s the feeling that many Americans simply didnâ€™t care enough about their experiences to vote against a sexual aggressor that has made it so challenging for women to be intimate again, even with trusted partners. And Maltz points to research that has found that â€œinstitutional betrayalâ€ â€• the kind that happens when a student reports an assault and his or her university fails to provide backup â€• can exacerbate trauma, leading to further anxiety, depression and sexual problems.

â€œThose results suggest that institutions â€• or in this situation, the election â€• has the power to cause additional harm to assault survivors in the form of sexual effects,â€ she said. Women can feel re-traumatized, Maltz added. They can project their feelings onto someone else, such as a partner or even Trump himself.

Thatâ€™s exactly what is happening to Jamie*, 31, who was date raped when she was 16.

â€œWhen I look at Donald Trump, I have this visceral reaction where I look at him as someone who actually sexually assaulted me,â€ she said. â€œIt has put me into this hole, where I donâ€™t feel like I want to be intimate with my live-in boyfriend of four years.â€ They have not had sex since the election, and she has no sexual appetite right now.

Jamie understands, of course, that Trump did not actually assault her â€• but she canâ€™t shake the feeling that she has been violated in some way.Â

â€œIâ€™ve never experienced looking at a stranger and having that kind of reaction,â€ she said. Jamie is hopeful she and her boyfriend will resume their sex life soon, but the thought of seeing Trumpâ€™s face every day for four years worries her.

â€œI just feel like, ugh. Dirty. Muddy,â€ Jamie said. â€œI feel like I was victimized.â€
